Natural Allergy Relief and Seasonal Health with Essential Oils

Essential oils chemically support the body in its ability to handle sensitivity to common allergens.  Some of the most available and economical essential oils can provide powerful relief.  Simply diffusing equal parts lemon, peppermint, and lavender can ease the oversensitive immune system’s response to indoor and outdoor pathogens.  Clinical research has suggested that lemon “is a good alternative to conventional medicine for the treatment of perennial and seasonal [allergies],” supporting healthy respiratory function and assisting with seasonal respiratory discomfort.  L-menthol from peppermint has been found to inhibit inflammation, promoting easy breathing when diffused.  Lavender has been found to inhibit the immediate hypersensitivity to the release of histimine, and melaleuca, tea tree oil, has been found to reduce histimine-induced swelling.  These, as well as geranium and helichrysum (anti-allergenic), melissa and roman chamomile (anti-histimine), rosemary and basil (steroidal), eucalyptus, and many other essentials, are commonly found in the natural arsenal to fight allergies. Essential oils can be administered aromatically, inhaling from the bottle or from a diffuser; topically, applied to the skin, generally recommended added to a carrier oil (i.e. coconut oil (fractionated), jojoba, olive); internally, added to water, or taken in capsule form*.

Remedy Recipes (2)

Allergy Power Trio
2 drops Lavender
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Peppermint
Take aromatically, such with a diffuser.  Also can be added to water, or consumed in capsule form*

Airborne Relief Combo

Lemon, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Roman Chamomile
Use in equal parts.
This blend has been effective for relieving hay fever and other airborne allergy symptoms that result in sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.
Can also be taken in capsule form, 1 drop each.

All Around Blend
6 drops Lavender
6 drops Roman Chamomile
2 drops Myrrh
1 drop Peppermint
Blend with carrier oil and apply behind ears, temples, and thymus.

There are also many blends readily available commercially.   doTERRA’s TriEase soft gels combine lavender, peppermint, and lemon in capsule form.  doTERRA’s Breathe blend, available in oil, lozengers, and vapor stick, supports overall respiratory health, minimizing the effects of seasonal threats and aiding in recovery.  Additionally, essential oils can target detoxification, which supports the permanent reduction of the body’s reaction to allergens (i.e. juniper berry, cilantro, rosemary), and essential oils that generally support a healthy immune system are beneficial in prevention (i.e. wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus).
*It’s not uncommon that the recommendation for using essential oils for seasonal health is through ingestion.  Knowledge, mindfulness, and the highest quality product is important when considering taking essential oils internally.  Information on how the oils work through ingestion and the benefits can be found below.
